Pokies expenditure down nearly 10% since peak – down 20% when inflation adjusted
Figures released by the DIA show that expenditure on non-casino gaming machines has dropped $97 million (9.4%) since the peak recorded in June 2004 the Chairman of the Charity Gaming Association, Rt Hon Paul East, said today.

“If the numbers are adjusted for inflation in the same period the decline is even steeper at 20.2%.

“This compares with other forms of gambling which have flat-lined or increased their share of discretionary gambling spending.

“The figures are for the year to June 30, 2008. We know that the total revenue for the second half of 2008 has fallen further and that this trend has continued into 2009. The results have significant implications for the ability of community organisations to obtain grant funding for community projects and will exacerbate the decline in community philanthropy arising from the tightening of the economy generally,” concluded Paul East.
