Charities Commission gives advice on registration
The Charities Commission has advised CGA it believes many Class 4 gaming societies may not wish to register as charities under the Charities Act.

This is because the breadth and scope of some grants made by most societies falls outside the relatively narrow definitions of what constitutes a charity under the Charities Act.

Registration as a charity under the Act means that money received by way of grants is not seen as taxable income.

Activities such as sports amnd horse racing are clearly excluded from being a charitable activity and therefore grants to these sorts of organizations don't qualify for non-taxable status.

The CGA has circulated the attached letter to its members.
